Description
This wild iris (Iris missouriensis) is growing in a wet meadow on a ranch in Colorado.
The blue lines on the petals leading to the yellow are nectar guides. They're guiding insects to the pollen. Lots of flowers have them, but they're often visible only in the ultraviolet spectrum, so insects can see them and we can't.
The wild iris grows throughout the western U.S. and Canada. It's called Rocky Mountain Iris or Western Blue Flag Iris depending on where you are. It can range from foothills to subalpine conditions.
